Known for his creative use of live sampling, Pianist/DJ/Producer/Innovator Mark de Clive-Lowe is putting the acoustic piano in focus on Live At The Blue Whale, a new 4 track EP recorded live at Los Angeles’ favorite jazz club, the Blue Whale. The EP finds MdCL paying homage to fearless musical explorers Yusef Lateef, Sun Ra and Ahmad Jamal alongside a new original composition of his own. Fittingly, he is accompanied on his musical journey by L.A. favorites Josh Johnson (Miguel Atwood-Ferguson/Wayne Shorter) on sax and flute, Brandon Eugene Owens (Robert Glasper/Terrace Martin) on bass and Gene Coye (Thundercat/Flying Lotus) on drums

For those unfamiliar with the Blue Whale, it is Los Angeles’ premier location for carefully curated, most often improvised live music. It makes sense then that Mark de Clive-Lowe’s one of a kind blend of live instruments and electronics would gel perfectly with the Whale’s forward thinking spirit, creating the ideal environment for a live recording. In the EP’s opener, “Evergreen,” we hear an MdCL original that begins with an acoustic piano introduction, quickly morphing into a heavily beat driven landscape for the keys and sax to interact with. Nearly as soon as the programmed beat begins we hear the interplay of the live sampling and live performance, creating a sonic mashup that is better listened to than described. Check it out below.
